We are all born with great skin. Remember how baby skin feels? Soft, glowing and clear!
Over time, our age and our negligence give way to a dull and tired skin. A healthy and glowing skin is the indication of how healthy the body is. I have listed down 9 points that helped me get a clearer skin. I hope this helps you too.
1. WASH OFF
Cleansing is the most important step to a healthy and glowing skin. It removes dirt and dead skin cells. It helps clean the pores of your skin and prevents breakouts that are caused by clogging of pores.
Everything else that you do, won’t work if this basic step is not followed. Opt for a gentle face cleanser to wash off the dirt you have accumulated throughout the day. Make sure to clean your face at least twice a day.
Tip: Use clean towels to pat dry your face. If that’s too much of a hassle for you, try using paper towels. Also, change your pillow covers often to avoid zits on your face.
2. GO NATURAL
Use ayurvedic and organic products as much as you can. This will help you in the long run. Most face packs can be made from ingredients in your kitchen. You can find a home remedy for almost all your skin problems online.
Apply multani mitti face pack every weekend if you have oily skin. Multani mitti (Fuller’s Earth) helps reduce the acne as it absorbs excess oil. It also helps improve skin complexion and skin elasticity.
For moisturizing your skin, use fresh aloe vera gel from your garden. It has cooling properties and can help you get rid of acne and redness.
3. REMOVE THAT MAKEUP
Remove your makeup before you hit the sack. Your skin needs to breathe at night and that is not possible with that fake layer on. Use an oil based makeup removal solution if you use waterproof makeup.
For removing everyday makeup, I suggest you use rose water with cotton pads or makeup removal wipes.
Tip: Keep makeup removal wipes handy by your nightstand for those nights when you are too lazy to crawl out of bed.
4. BLOCK THE SUN
Use a sunscreen of at least 15 SPF that blocks UVA and UVB rays. Try not to exceed 40 SPF as using sunscreens of SPF over 40 can harm your skin.
Also, never skip using sunscreen even when it is cloudy outside. Your skin is harmed by constant sun exposure, whether or not you see a burn. The damage from sun occurs over a lifetime. Using a sunscreen lowers the risk of skin cancer and prevents tanning and sunburns.
5. DRINK MORE H2O
Drinking more water helps flush out toxins from your body and also helps improve skin complexion.
Women should drink about 1.6 liters of fluids and men should drink about 2.0 liters of fluids per day. That’s about eight glasses of 200ml each for a woman, and 10 glasses of 200ml each for a man.
If you’re feeling thirsty you’re already dehydrated. So don’t wait until you need a drink, sip small amounts throughout the day to keep yourself hydrated.
Tip: If you forget to drink water often, you can download free apps that help you set a reminder to drink water at regular intervals.
6. NIGHT CARE
Night care becomes more important as you grow old. Your skin repairs itself during your sleep. Skin cell renewal rate is double at night than during the day.
After you have taken off your makeup, pat on light night cream to help repair your skin while sleeping. Do not try to over nourish your skin in the night as very rich and creamy lotions interfere with the process of skin regeneration.
Tip: Try to sleep for at least 8hrs every night. Your skin will look dull and you’ll get bags under your eyes if you don’t get enough sleep.
7. EXFOLIATE
Exfoliating is important for removing the dead cells on your skin. It helps penetrate other products deeper and thus helps you get better results. Exfoliate once a week to get rid of the dead skin that might clog your pores.
Tip: If you have irritated skin/acne-prone skin avoid exfoliating. It can break out even more if you are too harsh on your skin.
8. EXERCISE
Exercise daily, even if it’s just for 15 minutes. Gym, jogging or yoga! Do what you enjoy the most.
Exercising will give your body the necessary blood circulation, and also accelerate the cleansing process of your entire body.
When you exercise, the tiny arteries in your skin open up, allowing more blood to reach the skin’s surface and deliver nutrients that repair damage from the sun and environmental pollutants. You are sure to notice a glow on your face if you exercise regularly.
9. DO NOT EXPERIMENT
Find the products that your skin responds well to and then stick to them, no matter what. Be loyal to the products that have been good to your skin.
Do not get tempted by new launches in the market. Many of them claim a lot but do very little. I personally try out a product only when I hear exceptionally good reviews from my friends or beauty bloggers.
These are 9 very basic skin care steps to be followed for glowing skin. Keep up the good habits if you are already following some of the points listed above. For those you have not been following, try to inculcate them in your day-to-day life.
